The HealthSnap software allows personal trainers to review a client’s current health and fitness habits and generates a custom report with guidance on specific areas they should improve on.

How do you use the HealthSnap software?

Amanda LaPointe: It is really easy to use. The software is basically a questionnaire. So somebody who is using the software basically just kind of just sits down at a laptop or uses an iPad and just goes through and answers questions. So it is really easy and they are just kind of answering the questions based on their current health habits and fitness habits, stuff like that. It is super easy, you are just kind of sitting down and answering questions based on trying to be as honest as you can, but answering just the questions that are asked.

What are the questions you need to ask during the patient’s assessment?

Amanda LaPointe: During this I honestly try not to ask too many questions. I try to help facilitate the answers, but the questions are all asked. They are sitting there, they are reading the questions, there’s maybe a question about how many leafy green vegetables do you eat and the answer would be 1 to 2, or 2 to 3 something like that. So I kind of just kind of help them along to try to get their most accurate answer because it is easy to kind of like fudge the numbers a little bit. I am just kind of guiding them along and just giving a little guidance to help them answer it accurately. The questions are already laid out for them and they are just kind of answering and I am just kind of helping them along and making them feel comfortable.

Do you conduct a physical test with the patients before a fitness strategy is determined?

Amanda LaPointe: So within the HealthSnap software there is an assessment that I do towards the end. The client or patient will answer all the questions and at the end we will sort a little, not so much a fitness test but sort of just like a range of motion test taking a look at the shoulders, your posture, your ability to squat, your core strength, stuff like that. It is a very kind of general test that we do to see if there are any restrictions, tightness, lack of range of motion, stuff like that. Then through that, it will kind of also generate out a strategy for the patient and the software kind of spits out recommendations based the limitations that we found or the lack of limitations. So it is not a huge test or assessment but just kind of a few things to pick up on and then from there just kind of make a general recommendation.

Will the tool provide diet and nutrition advice?

Amanda LaPointe: Absolutely, yeah. After you finished all the questions, you get a report and it is broken down into 4 sections. One of them is metabolic. One of them is cardiovascular. One is musculoskeletal, and the other is nutrition. It does give you diet and nutrition advice. It gives you a little bit of a sample of foods and why you would want to eat those foods, but it also gives you what you should be eating, based on your answers, your height, weight, all that stuff. It gives you the number of calories that you should have in a day. It also breaks it down into number of calories for proteins, carbs, fats, fiber and tells you how much water you should drink. So this is all based on the things that you answered for the questions and then it spits out all the information.

Not only is it giving you specifically how many calories you should eat, but it breaks it down and explains a little bit why you should be eating them this way. Then it gives you some really great information on why you should be eating all these green leafy vegetables. This is what you should be doing if you are eating too much red meat. It really gives you a lot of in depth information. So somebody, even like me, I love reading this stuff and seeing why we want to do this. How many calories I should be eating, so for someone who doesn’t really know, there is a lot of great information nutrition and diet wise.

How has using this technology improved the health and fitness programs for your patients?

Amanda LaPointe: It has been really great. It has been able to give our patients and clients a snapshot of their current health and basically their habits and sort of like their participation in exercise right now. It is giving them a snapshot of where they are at right now and then it gives them recommendations on what they should do. Even it is somebody who is currently working out and eating pretty good, this gives them a little extra info and just kind of gets them excited about how they can help themselves do a little bit better or how to improve values. If they want to increase their muscle mass, if they want to get better on their nutrition habits, this is a really good guide. It has some really great information and just kind of helps them get to the next step. This tool allows us to make the right recommendations for the patient or client who needs a little bit of help.
