Preventing ACL Injuries

ACL injury has an annual incidence of more than 200,000 cases, with the majority of these injuries actually occurring when playing agility sports. Female athletes have a higher risk of being injured. In fact, research shows that female athletes are 2 to 8 times more likely to sustain ACL injuries than male athletes. Some theories for this discrepancy include differences in anatomy, lower extremity alignment, joint laxity, muscle development, hormonal differences, and overall general conditioning between male and female athletes.

Research has shown that one of the best ways to prevent injury to the ACL is for female athletes to undergo preventative training programs that include strengthening, balance and body mechanics training –  preferably through a trained physical therapist. Contact us for more information.
