People should consider starting a maintenance technique or treatment because typically when people come in to see us, it’s already to the point where they are in pain. Whenever you have pain, it’s because there is some underlying injury that is causing it. Now, it takes a while for that injury to turn into pain so by treating things earlier under a wellness type of program, we can actually prevent that sort of pain from these underlying injuries.
The best time to start is with children. For children we offer similar adjustments that we do with parents. We do a lot of lower force techniques that can be much gentler that kids are very comfortable with. Myself, I have an 18-month-old daughter who I’ve been adjusting her whole life and you can definitely see the differences with the chiropractic adjustments. It doesn’t mean that you would need to get adjusted three times a week for your entire life; it’s just something that we use to monitor. There are different techniques aside from chiropractic – muscle techniques and different models in treating soft tissue injuries. With these, we can catch things before they turn into true issues.
We are seeing a lot of bad posture with kids text messaging now, being on their computers. So this tends to lead to earlier degeneration in those populations than we’ve seen ever before. Typically with these postural degenerations, the forces being put through the different segments of the spine are putting a lot more pressure on those discs. Through chiropractic, we can actually try to prevent or reverse those deficiencies and try to treat the injuries before they actually start happening.
